Troyan is a town
with strong and distinctive personality, moulded by history, climate and
topography. It has some 25 000 inhabitants and is the center of a municipality
under the same name, including 21 villages (apex. 893 sq.km).
The town Troyan is situated in the North Bulgaria, 160 km north-east
of Sofia. Troyan is located on the richly terraced banks of the river Bali
Osam at the North foot of the Troyan - Kalofer part of the Balkan
Mountains, near the Troyan Pass, at 400 m above sea level.
The climate in
the region is transitional - from temperature and continental to
mountainous, and is a combination of a rainy spring, warm summer, sunny
autumn and mild snowy winter. The rainfall is above the average for the
country and the snow-cover holds for about 50 days.
The geographical situation of Troyan is favorable for its transport
links. Now there are roads connecting Troyan with the capital of Bulgaria
and with the principal cities in the country. Once outside of main cities,
the roads are relatively uncrowded and touring becomes a pleasure. Troyan
is also the terminal of the railway from Svishtov via Levski to Troyan. The
nearest airport are Plovdiv (125 km) and Sofia (160km), the nearest
sea-port - Bourgas (245 km) and the nearest river-port is Svishtov (110
km).
